Green: The green zone is defined by levels of ground motion that are either below the
threshold of general detectability or, if at higher ground motion levels, at occurrence rates
lower than the already-established background activity level in the area which requires no
response: Pumping operations proceed as planned. (Threshold magnitude =___*)
Amber: The amber zone is defined by ground motion levels at which people would be
aware of the seismic activity associated with the stimulation, but damage would be
unlikely and prompting the following response: Pumping proceeds with caution, (Threshold magnitude =___*)
possibly at reduced flow rates, and observations are intensified.
Red: The lower bound of the red zone is the level of ground shaking at which
damage to buildings in the area is expected to set in. Injection is suspended immediately. (Threshold magnitude =___*)
* - to be set by ODNR, not published
This science experiment is flawed from BOTH of its premises; that induced siesmicity gradually increases in magnitude AND that induced seismicity will stop if injection is stopped.
The Youngstown Earthquakes of 2011-2012 started in the 2.1 range and proceeded to increase in magnitude until the well was shut down December 24, 2011 after the 10th earthquake in 10 months hitting 2.7 magnitude.
December 31, 2011 the 4.0 magnitude earthquake that terrorized the valley hit the seismometers JUMPING 13 doublings in magnitude from the 2.7 quake. 2.8-3.9 magnitude earthquakes did not happen.
Gradual does not happen here.
Again,
December 31, 2011 the 4.0 magnitude earthquake that terrorized the valley occurred AFTER the pump was shut off!
Either ODNR is incompetent as hell or I need to stop doing this.
